The Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) is the democratically-elected voice of Scotland’s young people.
Young people aged 14-25 can stand as a candidate in SYP elections. We're looking for blind and partially sighted young people living in Scotland to stand for the two places allocated to Haggeye candidates in the upcoming SYP elections.
Read what motivated Claire Forde from Greenock to stand as a MSYP. You can also hear Claire speak about this on RNIB Connect Radio.
The SYP elections will take place between the 8-21 November 2021.The election process is split into different stages:
This is the time when you can register that you are interested in standing to be elected as one of our next Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs).
Registering does not commit you to anything and you can change your mind at any time.
For more information, and to discuss the process and what is involved further, contact [email protected].
If you decide you would like to stand as a candidate for the SYP then there will be a range of training from both the SYP and RNIB Scotland over the summer.
This may be done online or in person depending on local restrictions at the time.
During this time, we will work with you to develop your own manifesto. Your manifesto will explain the purpose of your campaign, your aims and policies, and your motivations to be a SYP candidate.
It is important that your manifesto reflects the issues that matter most to blind and partially sighted young people in Scotland.
There will also be an opportunity to meet with former Haggeye members of the SYP to hear directly from them about their experiences and what you can expect.
Once candidates have been confirmed, we'll meet with each candidate to ensure they still want to be involved and plan out the next steps ahead of the election together.
This is the time when you campaign for people to vote for you. We'll promote all candidates through the Haggeye Facebook and Twitter and on the RNIB Scotland social media pages. You'll have the opportunity to be interviewed by RNIB Connect Radio.
We will also host hustings events. Hustings events are where young people from across Scotland will have the opportunity to ask SYP candidates questions and find out more details about their manifesto.
This is the period where any blind or partially sighted young person in Scotland, aged 12-25, can vote for their preferred candidate from the Haggeye candidates.
Once the ballot has closed and all votes have been counted, we'll announce which candidates received the most votes and have been voted to represent Haggeye as MSYPs for the next term.
More information will be announced nearer to the date of the elections and will be dependent on local coronavirus restrictions, if still in place.
