Who we are and what we do to support children and young people with complex special needs to live, learn and grow at RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning.
Expert education and care
We support children and young people who have learning difficulties and disabilities and are blind or partially sighted. Additional complex needs we support include:
Our multi-disciplinary team ensures that all aspects of a child's education, care and health needs are met. Each child's goals for their development and wellbeing are tailored to meet their unique set of needs, interests and abilities. Teachers, teaching assistants, therapists, nurses and social care professionals work with parents, families and carers to continue a consistent approach outside of the school day. We promote achievement in personal development, independence, communication, mobility and socialisation. All RNIB Pears Centre staff and volunteers are required to undertake regular training in safeguarding children and young people.
Our school is the only non-maintained special school in England to be awarded specialist status for SEN cognition and learning. This recognition is helping us to improve the learning experience for blind and partially sighted children and young people with multiple disabilities and complex health needs across the UK.
We recently achieved the gold standard Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) for all aspects of our education provision. The IQM is a standard for assessing schools against a nationally recognised framework on inclusion.
We have also been presented with a prestigious Research Charter Mark by SSAT (The Schools Network) for our involvement in a wide range of research. This Research Charter Mark is a quality award for schools and academies who demonstrate the importance of enquiry-based teaching.
