Essex Volunteer Campaign Coordinator Phil challenged First Group to take part in a Swap with me event on 3 September at the Chelmsford First Depot as part of our bus campaign. Blind and partially sighted people joined First Essex drivers and managers, as well as representatives from Chelmsford City Council.

Drivers and staff wore blindfolds and sim specs while attempting to hail and board a bus while blind and partially sighted passengers were able to sit in the driver's cab.

Drivers commented on how much they had learnt and how this would change the way they worked in future. One driver told us, "I could only hear it when it approached. In reality this means I would have to flag down every single bus!" While a campaigner said "I never appreciated before that bus drivers have to combat engine noise, passenger noise and traffic noise when trying to hear me asking them questions."

Well done to Phil for all of his efforts!
