"I first developed my eye condition, glaucoma, at the age of five. Since then I’ve had around 23 operations, with the result that I now have about 10 per cent vision.

"On a day to day basis I can make out some outlines and colours, but nothing in any detail and I use a white cane to get around. I initially became involved with RNIB Northern Ireland as a volunteer and campaigner, eventually becoming a member of the Northern Ireland committee. In 2015, I was delighted to take on the role of Ambassador for RNIBNI and most recently was honoured to become Chairperson of the Northern Ireland and Isle of Man Network. I’ve always had an interest and passion for issues around sight loss and believe there are still huge barriers facing the community. I will continue to play my part in making sure blind and partially sighted people can live their best lives."
