Gordon explains why he always has a book in hand

When I was a boy, my family used to tour Scotland during the summer holidays. At every town, I would be allowed to wander off because my parents always knew where to find me – in a bookshop. Ever since I learned to read, I’ve always had a book in hand. Fact or fiction, it didn’t matter. What mattered was I knew I would be utterly bored if I had nothing to read. At times where books were forbidden, such as during meals, I used to read the labels on sauce bottles. Not reading was, for me, unbearable. When I lost my sight, not being able to read was one of the worst aspects as I tried to adapt. Thanks to RNIB’s Talking Books, I can download audiobooks to my phone whenever I want. So, once again, I’m never without a book.

Our Talking Books Service is free and gives you access to thousands of fiction and non fiction books for children and adults.
