Richard Rankin believes smartphones and tablets can be a powerful change for people with sight loss.
My involvement with RNIB has been very rewarding. When I retired I wanted to be able to use some of my professional skills in IT and mobile computing and make a positive contribution to the lives of others. I initially worked with the tech squad, fixing problems with clients’ home computers, but training around the emerging digital capabilities in mobile technology has become the focus of my contribution over recent years. Using smartphones and tablets can be a powerful change for people with sight loss. To carry devices incorporating satnav, reader, phone, email, music player, messaging and diary functions in your pocket is amazing. Realising all these capabilities using accessibility tools is a challenge, but most are able to master some of these and therefore realise some of the potential. One day smartphone makers and programmers may actually agree on accessibility standards, allowing far wider use of the technology.
