Share your Experience

Description

We need you to share your lived experience as part of training sessions for leisure centre staff on welcoming blind and partially sighted members and guests. This is a partner programme between See Sport Differently and British Blind Sport. Blind and partially sighted people are twice as likely to be inactive than people without sight loss. Together, British Blind Sport and RNIB want to change this. We want more people with sight loss to get involved and feel the benefits as participants or spectators. We are determined to challenge perceptions about sport and sight loss, so that blind and partially sighted people can get involved however they want to. We are taking lots of different approaches to achieve this and one is providing training sessions for leisure centre staff on welcoming and assisting blind and partially sighted members and guests. We know that this training makes more of an impact when blind and partially sighted people join us for the session and share their lived experience. As a volunteer on this project, you’d be joining training sessions which will be led by a trainer facilitator. You’d share your experience of being blind or partially sighted and what makes venues more or less accessible to you. You’ll answer questions from attendees and help them gain a better understanding of what it’s like to be blind and partially sighted. Your contributions to the training will help bring it to life and be more memorable. Overall, this will help the leisure centres in your area become more accessible and inclusive of blind and partially sighted people. In return, you will receive training and support from your volunteer manager to assist you in carrying out the role, expenses paid, and the opportunity to practice your public speaking skills in a relaxed and friendly setting with an audience who are eager to learn how to make the experiences of blind and partially sighted people in their facilities a better one.
