RNIB receives £1m from People’s Postcode Lottery

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has become the latest charity to receive £1m in funding from People’s Postcode Lottery.

The sight loss charity, which marked its 150th anniversary last year, plans to use the money to mobilise and grow its peer-to-peer support network and help change public attitudes towards sight loss.

In order to achieve the first of these objectives, RNIB will invest in growing its Connect community which enables people with sight loss to meet others with similar experiences and share information, advice and guidance, both face-to-face and online.

The charity also plans to invest in the development of its award-winning Connect Radio station which has over 150,000 listeners each week. Plans include working with the Connect community to develop new programmes to reflect their interests and aspirations and building partnerships with other organisations to increase the reach of the station.

Alex McDowell, Head of Public Fundraising at RNIB, said: “We’re so grateful to players of People’s Postcode Lottery for their support. The funding we receive will make a huge difference to the millions of people living with sight loss across Great Britain and we look forward to working together to break down the barriers facing blind and partially sighted people.”

Hazel Johnstone from the charities team at People’s Postcode Lottery said: “This is an exciting partnership between RNIB and players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The funding raised by players will help many blind and partially sighted people over the next year and we’re really thrilled about that.”

Founded in 2005, People’s Postcode Lottery has raised over £382 million for good causes across Great Britain. Players pay £10 a month for the chance to win prizes every day, and 32 per cent of the ticket price goes to charities.

About RNIB

We are the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Every six minutes, someone in the UK begins to lose their sight. RNIB is taking a stand against exclusion, inequality and isolation to create a world without barriers where people with sight loss can lead full lives. A different world where society values blind and partially sighted people not for the disabilities they’ve overcome, but for the people they are.

RNIB. See differently.
