Designing for Accessible Transport (DAT)

Designing for Accessible Transport (DAT) is a joint innovation project delivered through a partnership between RNIB and the Motability Foundation. Running from April 2025 to March 2027, the project focuses on tackling some of the biggest barriers disabled people, including those with sight loss, face when using transport.

We’re bringing people with lived experience, transport providers and decision makers together to create practical solutions that can make journeys more accessible for everyone.

The project runs through design sprints. Each sprint focuses on a real challenge shaped by peoples lived experiences.

Through this work, we’ll build a strong evidence base of insights, ideas and tested solutions. We’ll be sharing the valuable things we learn with partners and stakeholders wherever we think we’ve uncovered new opportunities to explore.

Sprint 1 focused on the challenges disabled people, including those with sight loss, on low incomes face when travelling to healthcare appointments. The goal was to identify where major support systems enable people to reach their appointments, where they fall short, and to explore new ways to support disabled patients’ access to secondary care. Over the course of Sprint 1 we developed a promising new journey planning tool and highlighted a range of broader systemic challenges.
