Inclusive Research Guide: Conducting research with blind and partially sighted people

Researchers, agencies, service designers, policymakers and charities often ask us how to conduct research that is accessible and inclusive for blind and partially sighted people.

To help meet this need, RNIB has developed the Inclusive Research Guide: Conducting research with blind and partially sighted people.

Drawing on RNIB's experience of conducting research with blind and partially sighted people, alongside lived experience within our team, the guide provides practical advice to help researchers remove barriers to participation and make their work more accessible and inclusive.

"Inclusive research isn't about creating a separate process. It's about recognising that people experience the world differently and making thoughtful adjustments so everyone has an equitable opportunity to take part and be heard." – Charlotte Jones and Jess Huke, RNIB’s Research Team

What's covered in the guide?

The guide includes practical advice on:

  • Planning inclusive research
  • Understanding accessibility requirements
  • Recruiting participants accessibly
  • Designing accessible surveys
  • Conducting interviews, focus groups and workshops
  • Using stimulus materials accessibly
  • Working with assistive technology
  • Reporting and sharing findings accessibly

Whether you're conducting research yourself or commissioning it from others, the guide is designed to help ensure blind and partially sighted people can participate fully and share their experiences.
