Jane Laurance, Head of Presentation Strategy at ITV, talks about audio description (AD)
UK Broadcasters and Ofcom support RNIB to raise awareness of audio description.
The Digital Economy Act gave Ofcom the power to require audio description on video on-demand services such as BBC iPlayer, NOW TV and ITV Hub. Ofcom are asking for advice on how this should be done and they will then advise the government’s department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) on how the new laws should be set up.
ITV has become the first UK broadcaster to provide the technical capability to broadcast HD commercials with embedded audio description. This happened when the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) Specification for the Delivery of HD Commercial and Sponsorship material was published last year.
ITV is providing Audio Description on more and more programmes. On ITV3 this is now over 50 per cent of content and over 25 per cent on ITV2, ITV4, CITV and ITV Encore. Certain programmes are not as ideally suited to audio description but a partially sighted viewer may still be able to watch, follow and enjoy.
