UK users of Be My Eyes, a free award-winning app providing assistance to people with sight loss, can now connect directly with RNIB’s team of Technology for Life volunteers for support with their access technology needs.

If you need sighted help with technology, including smartphones, tablets, desktop computers and braille displays simply select RNIB from the list of specialist support providers on the Be My Eyes app. You will quickly be connected to an expert RNIB Technology for Life volunteer in real time via video.

Our volunteers have extensive experience of working with blind and partially sighted people and understand assistive technology and how it works. We can provide a wide range of visual help, including describing a new piece of equipment, reading messages on LED screens, explaining what is on a computer screen if the screen reader has stopped talking and many other tasks.

You can connect to Technology for Life volunteers in the Be My Eyes app under Specialized Help - Blindness Organisations - RNIB. The service is available from 9am to 9pm, seven days a week.

About Be My Eyes

Since launching in 2015, more than 100,000 blind and partially sighted people have signed up as users on Be My Eyes, which is available on both iOS and Android platforms. Users can connect to more than two million sighted volunteers around the world, by pointing their smartphone camera at the object they need help to see.

Some common general uses of the app are:

  • finding lost or dropped items
  • describing pictures, paintings or other pieces of artwork
  • matching or describing colours (e.g. clothing)
  • reading labels
  • identifying the expiry date on food products
  • determining public transportation arrivals and departures.

Apart from this general support, there are many companies and organisations who offer Specialized Help through the Be My Eyes app, such as Microsoft, Lloyds Bank and NHS Test and Trace. RNIB's Technology for Life volunteers bring an exciting new element of access technology support to an already valuable service.
