Since October 2014 residual client account balances of up to £500 can be donated to charity without prior SRA authorisation. Follow the steps below and take the hassle out of the whole process.
Donate unclaimed client accounts
Dealing with unclaimed client accounts can be a nightmare. They take up extra time when reconciling accounts creating more administrative work as they must be accounted for and explained on an annual basis. You can help your firm by clearing these funds from your balance sheet.
We’ve made it easy for you to do in a way that means you support our work at the same time.
But before you get started you need to make reasonable attempts to establish the identity and contact details of the money’s owner.

Amounts over £500 can also be paid to RNIB provided the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) grants permission. To obtain permission please contact the Professional Ethics Guidance Team at the SRA, the process is very straightforward and they will be more than happy to help.

Security and peace of mind
Subject to confirmation that you have obtained SRA approval if necessary, we will be very happy to receive the donation and will email you acknowledgment of receipt, and we will let you have a signed individual indemnity letter for your records.
RNIB has sufficient safeguards in place to guarantee that all funds if reclaimed will be refunded.
