RNIB celebrates 90 years of our beloved Talking Books service
Join us in commemorating the ninetieth anniversary of Talking Books with a very special recording of Pride and Prejudice.
This year, Talking Books marks nine decades as one of our most loved services, bringing the pleasure of reading to thousands of blind and partially sighted people. Today, more than 70,000 users enjoy the service.
Talking Books launched after the First World War, when thousands of soldiers who had lost their sight returned home unable to read. The service continues to evolve – from shellac records played on a gramophone to today’s listeners now enjoying over 50,000 titles via Alexa, digital download, USB and Daisy CD.
Enjoy our special Pride and Prejudice recording
To commemorate this milestone, we’ve joined forces with some famous faces and voices for a special recording of Jane Austen’s classic romantic novel, Pride and Prejudice.
Free for everyone to enjoy, this recording brings to life Austen’s renowned characters with the likes of Bridgerton's Adjoa Andoh, Ted Lasso’s Phil Dunster, Heartstopper’s Corinna Brown and Celebrity Traitors’ Mark Bonnar.
Actress Lucy Scott, who is one of RNIB’s longest standing Talking Book narrators, and played Charlotte Lucas in the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice, also stepped back into the world of Austen’s characters for the recording.
The Lord Fellowes of West Stafford, RNIB’s Vice President and President of Talking Books provides a foreword and kindly reads one of the chapters.
