A Century of Support: Celebrating RNIB’s Talk & Support Volunteers
As we mark Volunteers’ Week, RNIB is proud to celebrate the incredible commitment and compassion of our Talk and Support volunteers. Today we're sharing some of the experiences of 5 Talk & Support volunteers who have given a combined 100 years of their time to supporting blind and partially sighted people across the UK.
Talk & Support connects blind and partially sighted people in telephone social groups, offering a friendly space to chat, share stories, and build lasting friendships. They currently offer an incredible 162 telephone groups a month.
For Chris, who has volunteered for 22 years, the appeal was simple: “I thought that it would be interesting as a blind person to hear other people’s stories,” he says. More than two decades later, that curiosity has blossomed into a deep commitment. “The thing I enjoy the most is being able to introduce readers to new authors in the book group and the discussions that arise from it.”
Similarly, Graham, with 23 years of service, first joined Talk & Support with a group of friends. “I’ve seen many people come and go but I still have the same slot on a Wednesday,” he says. “I think it’s just in my nature—when I start something, I like to stick to it. I believe it helps people to be able to talk things through.”
Conrad, also volunteering for 23 years, echoes this sentiment: “I enjoy listening to others and knowing they are enjoying themselves. Seeing the group coming back every week is great—it means they’re having a good time.”
Beyond commitment, these volunteers bring empathy and humour to every session. Mandy, who’s volunteered for 15 years, recalls receiving a mug with a funny quote to mark her service. “I do six groups a week and a quiz,” she says. “It’s about giving something back. Most of the members are in their senior years, and I know it means a lot to them.”
One of Mandy’s fondest memories is about two group members who formed a close friendship through their weekly calls. Over time, their connection grew beyond the group, and they began quietly supporting and visiting each other in person. “It was such a lovely surprise. They had kept it private, but it was clear how much the friendship had meant to them. It reminded me how powerful these conversations can be.”
Robert who celebrates 17 years of volunteering this July, highlights the bond he’s formed with his group: “I really love my group and look forward to every Monday. It’s all ladies, and we have a wonderful time. Every Monday morning is my favourite memory.”
Together, these five remarkable volunteers have created safe, warm spaces for connection, showing just how powerful a simple conversation can be.
As Robert puts it, “I just really love volunteering with Talk & Support and would advise anyone who is looking for something to do with their time to volunteer.”
After 100 combined years of service, that love for this essential volunteering role, and the difference it makes, is worth celebrating. Thank you to Chris, Graham, Conrad, Mandy, Robert and all our Talk & Support volunteers.
