Newry Library Hosts Sight Loss Support Session

An information and advice session for anyone affected by sight loss is due to take place in Newry Library on Thursday 13 November, 11am to 1pm.

Louise Kenny from leading sight loss charity RNIB’s Products and Advice Centre will demonstrate the newest products available from RNIB supporting people living with sight loss - from mobile phones, to kitchen gadgets and new Braille products, there will be something for everyone to have a look at. Open to friends and family or professionals working in the visual impairment/disability and individual or family support.

A monthly social group also meets on the second Thursday of every month, with the next meeting following this on Thursday 11 December.

Pauline Small, who developed significant sight loss due to diabetic retinopathy, is encouraging other people to come along. She said, “Being involved with the group has been so good. It’s great to get together with people with all different sight issues and support each other and learn about all different things like useful technology, products, services that are out there we can avail of, and just have a chat and some craic. I’ve made genuine new friends. We did several walks during the summer months there, we grab a coffee, sometimes lunch, and groups like this just help to keep you getting out there, keeping active and help your mental health as well.”

Fiona Joyce, Community Social Action Coordinator with RNIB said, “Living with sight loss can feel isolating—but it doesn’t have to be. Joining our local group offers more than just conversation; it’s a chance to build confidence, share experiences, and form lasting friendships. Our groups provide a safe, welcoming space where people who are blind or partially sighted can connect, learn from one another, and access support. We meet monthly in Newry. Get in touch - you’ll find encouragement, understanding, and opportunities to thrive.”
