RNIB Cymru’s response to Senedd Inquiry into Ophthalmology Services in Wales

In response to the Senedd Health and Social Care Committee’s recent report into ophthalmology services in Wales, RNIB Cymru Country Director, Ansley Workman, has issued the following statement:

“We are glad to see the Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee’s call for urgent action to prevent avoidable sight loss in Wales.

The inquiry’s findings confirm what patients and healthcare professionals have been telling us for years, that eye care services are under immense pressure, which in turn is causing patients to lose their sight when it could have been saved.

A year ago, experts put together a strategy to tackle the challenges facing ophthalmology but we’ve yet to see any significant changes or investment in this plan.

RNIB Cymru urges the Welsh Government to act at pace by giving ophthalmology services in Wales the vital investment it needs to put this strategy into practice. Every delay means more people living in fear of losing their sight when it could have been saved — and more lives changed forever.”
