How to support job seekers with sight loss

A young black woman and an older white woman are shaking hands in a professional setting.

Here, you can find advice and guidance on how to support your customers with sight loss to move into or to stay in work as an employment professional. Read on to find out more.

E-learning

Step one is to complete our e-learning course, Understanding Sight Loss for Employment Professionals. There is no cost and it only takes around forty minutes to complete the course. It will help you to understand facts around sight loss and some of the more common eye conditions and how they might affect your customer in their work.

Access to Work (ATW)

The Access to Work (ATW) scheme can provide practical support for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions enabling them to start or remain in work. This can include funding for:

  • assistive technology
  • specialist equipment
  • a support worker
  • travel to work and in-work travel.

AtW is available across England, Scotland, and Wales. In Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, there are different programmes.

Assistive technology

Assistive technology refers to a wide range of specialist equipment or software that enables a person with sight loss to undertake tasks that are often critical in the workplace. Depending on the skill level of your customer in using assistive technology, you might need to source specialist support to upskill them.
