CFVI For Children and Young People

An introduction to the CFVI for children and young people with vision impairment

This short video has been developed to introduce children and young people with vision impairment to the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI). The CFVI sets out and explains the support that children and young people with vision impairment aged 0–25 need so that they get fair and equal access to education. The CFVI was developed with young people, parents and carers and education professionals, and is now used widely across the United Kingdom.

Central to the video are the voices of the young people from UCAN, a performance and creative arts charity, who drew upon their lived experience to explain why the implementation of the CFVI is so important for their educational and social inclusion. Research has found how important it is for children and young people with vision impairment to feel fully included in school – both within the classroom and outside of it. It has also highlighted the importance of children feeling empowered as active decision makers, and by having the opportunity to develop skills to enable them to be as independent as possible.

“I really think the CFVI framework is needed to change things and I really hope that it changes things.” (Samira, young person working for UCAN Productions)

The CFVI acts as an important tool for addressing these issues, by taking a holistic perspective of the child/young person’s educational and social experience, and by ensuring a person-centred approach.

There are two other videos available developed by children and young people introducing different audiences to the CFVI, one for parents and one for professionals. The videos can also be accessed from the CFVI Resource Hub Area 1.
