CFVI for parents and carers
The CFVI can be used to enable parents and carers to understand the pathways of support for their child and the services which might be involved in providing that support.

We’ve written this guide with the help of a group of parents to explain the content and purpose of the CFVI. We want parents and carers to understand the additional support that exists for their child and give them the confidence and language to be able to discuss their child’s education with teachers and other professionals.

Following the launch of the Parent Guide, we have worked together with parents to develop an FAQ which captures helpful questions asked by parents and the responses to these.
If you have any questions about the Parent Guide or the CFVI itself, please contact us by emailing: [email protected] with ‘CFVI Parent Guide’ in the subject line.
An introduction to the CFVI for parents and carers of children and young people with vision impairment
This short video has been developed to introduce parents and carers of children and young people with vision impairment to the Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI). The CFVI sets out and explains the support that children and young people with vision impairment aged 0–25 need so that they get fair and equal access to education. The CFVI was developed with parents and carers, young people and education professionals, and is now used widely across the United Kingdom.
We spoke with parents and carers of children and young people with vision impairment to ask them what they thought should be included in the video. Central, however, to the video are the voices of the young people from UCAN, a performance and creative arts charity, who drew upon their lived experience to explain why the implementation of the CFVI is so important for the educational and social inclusion of children and young people with vision impairment and how you can have a role in supporting this.
Our research highlights how challenging it can be for parents and carers of children and young people with vision impairment to navigate the education system, and how there is what could be described as a postcode lottery of support. However, our research also highlights the importance of collaboration between parents and professionals to ensure that support is as effective as possible.

There are two other videos available developed by children and young people introducing different audiences to the CFVI - one for professionals and one for children and young people. All videos can also be found on the CFVI Resource Hub in Area 1.
