Inclusive Journeys: Improving the accessibility of public transport for people with sight loss
Blind and partially sighted people tell us that better accessibility to transport and public places is the most important factor to improve their quality of life. However, many are not able to make the journeys they want to – 1 in 3 rarely or never use public transport. This limits their ability to work and participate in society.
There are a range of barriers that people with sight loss face, and we are calling for transport providers to make their services more accessible to enable blind and partially sighted people to travel independently and live a fulfilled life. We also believe that accessible design is better for everyone – allowing an improved experience for all customers.
Research report
Our research report, funded by Motability, details common issues faced by blind and partially sighted people when making journeys. It also includes a checklist and details of our services for transport providers to help them create an accessible world that works for everyone.
Stories of lived experience
With our research partner 2CV, we have put together case studies from three participants who took part in the research – including one in audio form as told by participant Gemma herself. Each of these takes you through a typical journey and provides a real-life account of the barriers faced and the things that help.
