All aboard? Navigating bus travel with sight loss

More than half of blind and partially sighted people tell RNIB they want to go out more than they currently do. Getting around is one of the most frequent reasons that people with sight loss contact RNIB for help or support.

Bus travel is crucial to many blind and partially sighted people’s lives. Yet there remains a substantial gap between the rights and policies that exist to ensure accessible bus services and the daily experiences of blind and partially sighted bus passengers.

The “All aboard?” report outlines the shared, interconnected responsibilities of operators, commissioners and users of bus travel across the UK’s transport system, in helping to remove the barriers faced by blind and partially sighted people when accessing bus services.

Key findings

  • 56 per cent of blind and partially sighted people said they’d like to go out more than they do.
  • Fewer than half of blind and partially sighted people can make all the journeys by bus they want and need to.
  • 83 per cent said it is “very important” to have the option to travel by bus.
  • 95 per cent use buses at least monthly.
  • 49 per cent make fewer journeys to avoid bus stop bypasses.
