Our library collection gives you access to more than 22,000 braille books, in a wide choice of genres for adults and children.
Whether you’re reading for learning or leisure, you’ll find plenty to inspire you in the RNIB Library, which is used by more than 2,500 blind and partially sighted people nationwide.
March 2021 update: Braille Library service improvements
RNIB has been the leading advocate for braille for more than 150 years. In 2021, we are renewing our commitment to providing embossed braille, particularly in children’s literature.
From April 2021, our Braille Library service will be improved to offer braille books produced on demand giving our readers access to a larger collection of books via home delivery. These will be A4 format, smaller and slimmer in volume so they can fit through letterboxes, making them easier to store or read on the go.
Combined with our growing collection of electronic braille library books - available on memory card and download - the upgrade represents a renewed commitment to braille literacy and offers readers greater choice than ever before.
Under the improved service, braille books will be freshly printed for each reader on request providing a more hygienic service, with better print and a much smaller chance of squashed dots.
Books will never be out of stock, allowing lots of readers to request the same book at the same time, which is ideal to meet library members’ shifting demand for best sellers.
This significant investment is part of RNIB’s long-term commitment to improving access to printed braille.
Existing RNIB Braille Library members do not need to do anything as they will be automatically migrated across to the service in April 2021. Members will be able to request braille library books in the usual way via RNIB’s Helpline and they will get access to a new website for managing their individual book lists.

24 November 2020 update: Giant Print library to close in January 2021
Our Giant Print lending library facility will be closing from 31 January 2021 to be replaced with new systems offering our readers a better service.
Over time the impact of accessible books and devices in digital formats has continued to change the way many customers read. The majority of our giant print readers have already voted with their feet, moving across to our digital services which offer a far greater choice of books, in a wide variety of digital formats suiting braille and print users.
For those readers who have a continued need for giant printed books, from February our new print on demand service will offer those readers a much better free book delivery service at a significantly lower cost to RNIB.
David Clarke, RNIB's director of services, explains: “This move represents a significant upgrade for our library readers. At present the Giant Print Library stocks only 3,000 children’s books and only offers them in 24pt text.
“From 1 February 2021, the Giant Print Library will be replaced. Our customer feedback suggests that the majority of readers will favour the convenience of eBooks, supplied through our Bookshare platform, giving our young readers instant access to over 20,000 children’s titles. However, we are aware that some readers will prefer, or require, a paper book. From February, our free Personal Transcription Service will incorporate Print On Demand books from the Bookshare collection."
For those readers choosing to switch to eBooks, we recognise that not every family has access to a tablet or a Kindle, so we can offer technology grants and supplies. If you have any further questions or concerns regarding this transition, please contact our Helpline on 0303 123 9999 or email [email protected].
