Braille for children, young people and families

A mother and child reading braille together
Braille, along with other accessible formats, can open doors for children and young people with vision impairment in education, literacy, play and the enjoyment of reading. It can also help bring families together to play games, share bedtime stories, cook favourite family recipes, label gifts and so much more.
RNIB offers a range of information and resources to support your child and you on your journey with braille
Celebrating World Braille Day on 4 January 2025
We’re excited to be releasing a special RNIB Celebrations World Braille Day resource, giving inclusive play ideas for the whole family.
Go dotty for RNIB!
Lots of Dots is a fun, inclusive introduction to braille for schools, groups and other settings. The pack contains information about Louis Braille and accessible activities that raise awareness of how important braille still is, 200 years after it was invented. Braille and tactile toys and books
All children love to play, but vision is just one way to explore and learn about the world.
Our free Play Guide is full of accessible ideas to help you choose fun, interesting toys and create exciting play times and play spaces for your child. Whether you’re getting creative with braille paint by numbers or enjoying a shared reading book with your little one, there are lots of ways to involve braille and tactile exploration in your child’s play.
We also stock a range of braille toys and games in our Online Shop that are great for learning or just for having fun!
Children with vision impairment can also access over 11,000 braille books completely free through RNIB Library. With a wide range of genres to choose from, the library includes titles to suit children at every stage.
