Hywel Rees has been volunteering for RNIB Cymru for 4 years and is a Studio Reader in Cardiff. Studio Readers read and record books, magazines, and newsletters which blind and partially sighted people can listen to.

Life is full of print and the inability to read this can present significant barriers to leading an independent life. The team in Cardiff help with removing these barriers.

Hywel said: “I had finished paid employment and wanted to do something different. I met Emma and the team at RNIB and started checking the audio that had been recorded. I am now a studio reader and read aloud a variety of books that I would never normally choose to read, which makes it very interesting.”

“People send in their requests of what they would like to listen to and I am able to make that happen for them. I really love what I do.”

“I’ve learnt new skills and gained confidence by doing something I didn’t know that I could do. I started by just checking other people’s work and now I am part of a very upbeat team”.
